Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Chiropractor providing help for BPPV vertigo at Altrincham. Epley's and Dix Hallpike Manchester

BPPV is one of the most frequent causes of vertigo, particularly when symptoms appear or intensify with head movement. Many people describe it as the room spinning, especially when turning in bed, looking up or getting out of a chair.

At Optimum Chiropractic, we assess how the vestibular system, neck movement, posture and balance may be contributing to dizziness. While BPPV is related to the inner ear rather than the spine itself, cervical mechanics and muscle tension can influence how people experience and manage symptoms.

Our role is not to diagnose every case of dizziness.
It’s to assess, support, and guide you appropriately.

What causes BPPV?

BPPV is typically associated with displaced calcium crystals inside the inner ear. These can affect fluid movement within the semicircular canals, which are responsible for detecting rotational motion.

This may lead to symptoms such as:

• Spinning sensation (vertigo)
• Dizziness triggered by head position changes
• Imbalance or unsteadiness
• Nausea during episodes
• Short, sudden onset symptoms
• Difficulty lying down or turning the head

BPPV can develop gradually or follow injury, illness or long periods of reduced movement.

(Not all dizziness is BPPV. Assessment helps determine whether this presentation is likely — or whether referral is needed.)

How we assess

✔ Symptom triggers and movement patterns
✔ Balance, coordination and eye tracking
✔ Cervical spine movement and muscular tension
✔ Dix–Hallpike or positional testing (when appropriate)
✔ Medical history and contributing factors
