Sciatica is a pain that can be felt in the lower back, buttock and/or parts of the leg and foot. It is a symptom rather than a diagnosis and is caused by compression or irritation of the nerve.

The most common cause of sciatica is a disc herniation or more commonly known as a slipped disc. A vertebral disc acts as a soft cushion that separates the bones in the spine. Due to repetitive stress such as prolonged sitting, poor lifting techniques and twisting movements, the disc bulges out and compresses the nerves. Besides pain, there may be other symptoms present including weakness, numbness and pins and needles in the legs and feet.
